NATO Library: Loan Policies

LOAN POLICIES

Borrowing Items from the Library

NATO staff working at HQ can borrow books for one month, journals and reference works for one week.

You can renew your loans for further periods unless they have been reserved by another user. Renewals can be done by either contacting the Library or via My Account (you will first need to sign up for an account if you don't already have one).

A book return cabinet is located by the door as you enter the Library. When returning items, just drop them through the slot. When the Library is closed, please use the external book drop.

Requesting Items from other libraries (Interlibrary Loan Service)

Use the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service to obtain books and journal articles that are not available in the NATO Library. While this service is provided at a cost to the Library, there is no cost to you, the borrower.

To submit an ILL request, go to the Catalog, then click on 'Ask a Question' (you will be prompted to sign into your account). Once signed in, please choose 'Article Request' or 'Book Request' from the drop-down menu. Requests by phone or email are also accepted.

Interlibrary Loans Policy (for non-NATO staff)

Non-NATO staff may borrow books from the Library's collection only through their local library as we only lend books to other libraries. As an individual, please ask your local library to request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) with us.

The Library accepts ILL requests from other libraries in Belgium and abroad :

  • It is member of Impala, the Belgian electronic document ordering system for libraries, and its collections are accessible via Antilope (the Belgian union catalog of periodicals) and UniCat, (the Belgian union catalog of monographs).
  • ILL requests can also be sent directly to us. Please contact the NATO Library (library@hq.nato.int, phone: +32(0)2 707 4414) for terms and conditions.

All the books included in the Catalog are available for interlibrary loan (ILL). The only exception are items marked with 'Collection Type: Reference Collection', which have to be consulted on the premises.
