The legal definition of "piracy" is provided in Article 101 of this convention. However, this definition only applies to the high seas. Thus, according to this definition, illegal acts that occur in a state's terroritorial waters -- where many of the recent piracy attacks have occured -- would not be deemed as acts of piracy.
