Rose Gottemoeller, NATO's first female Deputy Secretary General (2017)

Rose Gottemoeller is NATO’s second most senior civilian and first female Deputy Secretary General. She talks about how growing up during the Cold War and the Space Race inspired her future path, the importance of NATO in facing new threats, including terrorism and an aggressive Russia and the challenges and rewards of her job.

No second chance - NATO’s female bomb disposal commander in Kosovo (2017)

1st Lieutenant Erin Schneider is commander of an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) detachment in NATO’s mission in Kosovo, KFOR. In a country where finding old munitions left over from past wars is common, her role means that her team is often called out to investigate, and either remove the munitions safely or detonate them in location. 

The EOD motto is “Initial success or total failure” because there is no second chance.

Latvian Army Female Officer (2017)

Ieva is a 1st Lieutenant in the Latvian army. As a logistics officer she helps the US military during their stay in Latvia as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

The Latvian armed forces have a higher than average ratio of female members, standing at 17%.

Norway's female tank commander (2017)

Lieutenant Silje Johansen Willassen is Norway’s Telemark Battalion’s first female tank commander.

Norway will be sending a tank company to Lithuania in May to support NATO’s enhanced forward presence. The company, of around 200 troops, will be sent from Norway’s Telemark Battalion. They will provide combat support to the German-led multinational battalion. The deployment will be for six months. 

Commanding one of the platoons is Lieutenant Willassen. She discusses the deployment and how she’s looking forward to working with NATO Allies. 

At the NATO Warsaw Summit last year, plans were announced to increase troop numbers in the eastern part of the Alliance with the deployment of four battalions to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland on a rotational basis.

Austrian Army 1st Lt. Eszter Deak is living proof that childhood dreams can become a reality. Since her arrival to Kosovo in late October, 2016, Deak serves in a dual-hatted position as the deputy company commander of Transport Company, Joint Logistics Support Group, KFOR, and as the transport company commander of the Austrian contingent there. A sampling of the tasks that Deak’s company provides include the transportation of personnel, fuel, water and moving containers as well as the recovery of vehicles in need of repair.

The Office of the Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security at NATO promotes and coordinates the implementation of the NATO/EAPC Policy and Action Plan built on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and related Resolutions. War and conflict have a disproportionate impact on women and children. Historically women have been left out of peace processes and stabilization efforts. The Women, Peace and Security agenda aims to inspire a new approach to international security, where the views and actions of women are as important as those of men.

40th Anniversary of the NATO Committee on Gender Perspectives (2016)

Today the Annual Conference of NATO Committee on Gender Perspectives (NCGP) concluded. The conference kicked off on Tuesday morning with an Open Conference, where the Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow and Deputy Chairman of the Military Committee Lt Gen Mark O. Schissler welcomed the audience.

The NCGP celebrated its 40th anniversary and the conference brought together over 110 participants from 35 countries. The NCGP was pleased to welcome national delegates from Ukraine and Colombia for the first time. The outcome of the conference were recommendations to the Military Committee on how the NATO and Partner community can strengthen military leadership and accountability to implement a gender perspective.

Meet Brigadier General Giselle M. Wilz, the first female NATO commander of NATO HQ Sarajevo. 

Wilz comes from the North Dakota Army National Guard and is a native of Richardton. Prior to her arrival, she was the first female colonel, chief of staff and general in the North Dakota Army National Guard. 

Brigadier General Wilz discusses her role, her achievements to date and advice to others looking to progress in their career.
