British military personnel are starting to return home from their mission in Libya after Nato confirmed the end of operations from next Monday. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond visited an Italian air base where UK forces have been stationed to thank them for a "job well done" during the seven month mission. Six Tornado jets have already returned, while HMS Liverpool and the remaining British aircraft will begin their journey home in the next few days. Caroline Wyatt reports from southern Italy.

His presence in the capital is aimed at sending a message about his authority. To the south, Nato aircraft bombed Bani Walid, one of the last pro-Gaddafi strongholds, following fighting there. Colonel Gaddafi has called for Libya to be "engulfed in flames" in an audio message carried by a loyalist TV channel. In Tripoli, human rights workers are trying to salvage records from inside Libya's most notorious prison, Abu Salim. Over the course of several decades, thousands of Libyans are said to have been jailed and tortured in the prison by members of the Gaddafi regime. Jeremy Bowen reports from Tripoli.

Rebel forces have been celebrating in Tripoli's Green Square after storming Colonel Gaddafi's compound in the Libyan capital.
Earlier they ransacked and looted buildings belonging to the dictator and destroyed symbols of his regime. Lyse Doucet described the scene in Green Square, where Col Gaddafi had regularly appeared with supporters in the early days of the conflict.
